History in the Remaking

A striking landmark overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the likes of which had not graced the Los Angeles area coastline. If these walls could talk, they would revel in the tale of a legendary Roaring Twenties private beach club built for Hollywood’s elite. Over seven decades later, this storied beachside playground was reimagined as the Hotel Casa del Mar, Santa Monica’s most glamorous luxury hotel.

A Legendary Debut

On May 1, 1926, Club Casa del Mar opened as a private beach club, developed by H&H Holding Company, owned by brothers E.A. and T.D. Harter. Architectural Digest hailed it as a masterpiece, and the Italian Renaissance Revival building, designed by Los Angeles architect Charles F. Plummer, swiftly became a social hub for Hollywood celebrities and Southern California’s elite—a true symbol of opulence and exclusivity.

In 1941, the U.S. Navy commandeered the building during World War II, transforming it from a leisure sanctuary into a facility for enlisted soldiers. It closed in 1960, reflecting the post-war decline in interest in historic properties.

Shifting Sands

In 1967, Charles E. Dederich repurposed the building into the headquarters for the Synanon Foundation, which he marketed as rehabilitation center until 1978. That year, inventor and nutritionist Nathan Pritikin relocated his Santa Barbara-based Pritikin Longevity Center to the site, focusing on health, diet, and wellness on Santa Monica Beach.

Historic Glamour, Modern Revival

In November 1997, the Slatkin brothers of Edward Thomas Hospitality Corporation (ETC) acquired the building and undertook a monumental $50 million restoration. The project preserved its architectural grandeur while adding modern amenities and contemporary coastal design. On November 1, 1999, Casa del Mar reopened as a grand luxury hotel. It is one of only two hotels located directly on Santa Monica Beach, the other being ETC’s iconic Shutters on the Beach next door.
